After nearly a year of talking about it, two friends and I started a Saturday morning playgroup at the YMCA in Ma on Shan, a town 5 minutes drive from the University. It's a beautiful site, by the sea, with a running track, trees, birds, flowers, butterflies, and a bit of green space. The building we're using is about 5 x 10m and is fairly basic, but it does have aircon (Phew!) and is only used by our playgroup which makes tidying up easier. It's going to be renovated over the Summer which should be good.
The YMCA here are very supportive of the playgroup and are managing all the admin as well as providing snacks, mats, cleaning and so on. They are also charging families HK$100 (nearly £10!) a session which I am told is a bargain price in Hong Kong to cover costs of the staff and the site. They are very happy for it to be a Christian playgroup with Bible stories and songs, and we give the parents a magazine every month which explains a bit about our Christian faith.
We started the playgroup at the beginning of March and term ends on July 25th. However, we're currently having a 2-week enforced break to slow the spread of swine flu which the HK government is taking very seriously.
